Where we are
North side of the headland, bottom of the slipway.
North Landing sits on the north side of Flamborough Head, about a mile up the lane from Flamborough village. It’s one of the few places on this stretch of chalk cliff where you can get down to the sea, which is why the fishing cobles — and, for more than a century, the lifeboat — have always launched from here. The sauna is pitched on the sand right beside the old lifeboat station slipway.
Where is Flamborough?
Flamborough is the village on Flamborough Head, the great white headland that pushes out into the North Sea on the East Yorkshire coast. Bridlington is just to the south-west, Filey and Scarborough are up the coast to the north, and the whole headland is protected Heritage Coast.

What to bring
Come ready, leave warm.
Swimwear, flip-flops, a water bottle and two towels — one to sit on, one to dry off with.
There are no changing facilities on the beach, so arrive with your swimwear on under your clothes. A warm layer and a hat for afterwards are never wasted on this coast, whatever the month.

The beach & the tides
Read the tide before the cliffs.
North Landing is a small horseshoe of sand held between high chalk cliffs. At low tide the beach widens, rock pools open up and you can reach the mouths of the sea caves either side of the cove. At high tide the sand shrinks to a strip and the water comes right up to the foot of the slipway.
Check the tide first
The tide sets the shape of your day here. Our homepage shows today’s tide chart — high and low water, sunrise and sunset — so check it before you plan a cave walk. If you go exploring, start on a falling tide, keep an eye on your way back and never let the sea get between you and the slipway.
The cobles
You’ll often see the traditional Yorkshire fishing cobles drawn up on the slipway. It’s still a working landing, so give the boats and the people working them plenty of room.
At low tide the cove opens like a book. At high tide it closes again — read it in the right order.
Safety
The sea is the boss.
There are no lifeguards at North Landing. Every guest gets a safety briefing, and we can only guide you on your time in the sauna.
When the sea is too rough to safely use the beach, we may retreat up the slipway or cancel the sessions.
- There are no lifeguards at North Landing — on the sand or in the water.
- Every sauna guest gets a safety briefing; please listen to it even if you’ve been before.
- In rough seas, sessions may move up the slipway or be cancelled.
- Check the tide times before walking round to the caves, and never get cut off by the tide.
- Stay back from the cliff edges and the foot of the cliffs — chalk falls.
North Landing café
The Boathouse, in the old lifeboat house.
The old lifeboat house by the slipway is now the Boathouse café, run by a local fishing family and known for its seafood. It’s the obvious place to warm your hands on something hot after a session, or to sit and watch the cobles come in.
The Boathouse is a separate business from ROE, so check its opening times before you travel. The building itself has quite a story: the North Landing lifeboat station served this coast from 1871 to 1993, and the slipway was laid in 1890. Read more in our history of the lifeboat station.
